At times a tragic, a warm, and quite often a terrifying character, sometimes all within the same scene… and yet the nature of the character requires utmost restraint because, after all, she’s a robot. Her monologue in last night’s episode (S3E9 “The Paths That Choose Us”) was spectacular.

Credit to the writers as well because the character has seemingly infinite layers: a spiritual being driven by functional calculations; an individual of extreme power confined by invisible chains; simultaneously a mother, a mentor, and a lover as needed by Empire.

But it’s the quiet fire inside Birn that drives, in my opinion, the best ongoing performance on television.
