Hello r/CFB! Welcome to the 2025 Big XII Uniform Tracker - Week 1! Welcome back to all sixteen Big 12 teams! We are back in action, ready to track uniforms and review games for this exciting conference! In case you are new to the tracker, first, thank you for reading! Second, I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, and occasionally a brief history of the game/rivalry and/or fun facts. This week, we saw 13 Big XII teams at home, 1 at a neutral site, and 2 more on journeys to the East and West coasts. Let’s see how they fared, what they wore, and discuss how they looked as well! It is college football season once again!
I’m u/matte_purple, and let’s 3,2,1 go!
University of Houston Cougars vs Stephen F Austin State University Lumberjacks (UH Wins, 27-0)
UH: Red/Red/White (Link)
SFA: White/White/White (Link)
The Coogs played a series with SFA way back in the 40s (1946-48 to be exact), with SFA actually winning 2/3 games in the series. Their win in Houston in 1948 would have been the 1st year UH’s live mascot Shasta I was prowling the sidelines. But now, the series is tied up! Houston drove their way to a comfortable victory in this one, outgaining the Lumberjacks by nearly 200 yds. They really showed out on defense in the sacks and INT department, getting 2 of each, and SFA was 3/16 on third down, giving Houston their first home opener shutout since 1989. The Coogs will play hometown rival Rice next week! Great work from Willie Fritz and Co!
Houston beat the Lumberjacks in these brand new 2025 edition uniforms! There are a couple noticeable changes. Brand new contrasting cuffs and collars adds a nice distinction to these red suits and the new Houston wordmark on the chest feels more tailored than the block “Houston” from last year. They also appear to have fixed last year’s odd 45 degree angle offshoot on the thigh, throwing off the otherwise great looking pants. Those were my biggest complaint for Houston’s uniforms in the time I’ve tracked them so it is really refreshing to see them gone. I love the white details (facemask, collar, wordmark, cuffs, and pants) all contributing to a balanced look with a lot of simplicity to it. No bells, no whistles. Overall a successful uniform refresh, and it’s nice to notch a win in their maiden voyage! Red/Red/White is Houston’s most worn suit at 5 - now 6 - showings from 2022-2025, last worn in a win against Utah.
SFA updated their uniforms back in 2022. And apart from the UA Armourgrid template having some odd design features, I really love how the ‘Jacks have set themselves apart from other uniforms. For one, the shoulder stripes feature a tactful tree outline, an ode to the Lumberjacks name and the Piney Woods area of TX that the school resides. Second, I am a sucker for state outline helmets. For any team! The stickers and bumpers on the back are all fitting. Two Texas outlines, one memorializing the victims of the floods in central Texas (which is on every TX team’s helmet), and the other a warning sticker, I think this is the most state outlines I’ve ever seen on a uniform. My only nitpicks are 1.) the wordmark on the chest, and 2.) the number font feels off. While I adore the axe logo with the embedded Texas flag, it does look a little strange right next to the SFA on the jersey. The font reminds me of Tampa Bay’s old “alarm clock numbers”, but rounded. Apart from those penalties, which my love of the shoulders offsets, these are decent! Good contrasting away suit, but purple pants would have rocked.
Oklahoma State University Cowboys vs UT-Martin Skyhawks (OSU Wins, 27-7)
OSU: White/Orange/White (Link)
UT-Martin: White/White/White (Link)
UT Martin tends to be quite the player in the Big South-OVC. They’ve hit 8-10 wins each season since 2021, including big wins in the FCS playoff in 21 and 24. And while they did give OSU a great effort, the Cowboys got a hot start, jumping up 14-0 in the 1st quarter. QB Hauss Hejny looked incredible, but disaster struck when he went down after breaking his foot after the Cowboy’s third drive. We wish him a very speedy recovery, as he has already had surgery, but it was heartening to see Zane Flores perform well in his first collegiate showing. The Thursday game hopefully gave the Pokes plenty of time to answer some questions about the new QB situation, and to get ready for a big Week 2 matchup against Oregon. The Skyhawks head to El Paso to play UTEP. OK-State’s home opener win streak stretches to 30, the longest in the nation currently!
Oklahoma State generally wears this outfit in their first home game, trotting out a White/Orange/White suit for the third season opener in a row at Boone Pickens. This same W/O/W combo has now been worn in 8 of the last 14 home openers, which speaks to how beloved it is. The removal of the helmet stripe, while it felt a tad off to me, does lend itself to the “throwback Thursday” gameday theme. The other 6 home openers where this look wasn’t worn are similar, generally subbing in orange pants (‘22, ‘21, ‘18), with others utilizing gray jerseys and white/black pants (‘19, ‘15, ‘11). “Orange” you glad that trend went away?
We have actually seen the Skyhawks once before on the tracker! Last year, they faced K-State in Kansas, wearing an all-white away uniform that I expected once more here. They didn’t seem to update anything. It features the classic UTM logo up top, big stripes on the helmet that differentiated well from the Pokes, but the helmet was the biggest star. The rest of the UA compfit3 template felt very plain. No shoulder details, no pant stripes, really just the bare minimum in terms of numbers and wordmark. The color scheme lends itself to a lot of cool ideas. It would have been nice to at least see blue pants!
University of Cincinnati Bearcats vs University of Nebraska Cornhuskers (Nebraska Wins, 20-17)
UC: Red/Red/Red (Link)
NEB: White/White/Red (Link)
A big-time game in Arrowhead! The home of the Chiefs has been the stage for several Big 12 exhibitions, seeing KU 3 times in 2024, Mizzou and BYU in 2015, the KU-Mizzou “Border War” from 2007-2011, KSU-ISU in 2009 and 2010, several Big 12 Champ games in the 2000s, and many more. In this one we saw an old Big 12 powerhouse take on one of the newer members of the conference! This was a really close one. The Huskers staved off UC and QB Brendan Sorsby, whose pass intended for Caleb Goodie in the end zone was instead caught by NU safety Malcolm Hartzog Jr. in the final 40 seconds. Before that, though, Cincinnati looked like the scrappier team. Nebraska had 80 more total yds than Cincy, was plus-two in the turnover battle and had the ball for almost 20 minutes longer than Cincy, and the game was still very close. If the Bearcats don’t make those two costly errors, the heavily biased Nebraska crowd could have gone home cowed. UC looks to bounce back vs a Bowling Green team led by Pudge the Cat (look it up).
It wasn’t really in doubt what Nebraska would wear to this one. While Coach Matt Rhule has been bearish on alternates, they did announce one for their upcoming USC game. So here, they went with the ol’ reliable. The white helmet and uniform with red pants has been a constant classic for NU, and we actually saw it on the tracker, when Colorado played Nebraska back in 2023. It’s really tough to mess up this look, as it’s been a staple for nearly 44 years.
Playing against a team with large amounts of white and red, it felt obvious to me that UC would don mostly black. But they opted for something ENTIRELY different! And boy, these are RED. Not just that, these are brand new 2025 edition! There are noticeable differences to last year’s template, the contrasting collar and sleeve hems are gone, the new numbers have different fonts and outlines (structured with the same notch as the C-Paw logo and outlined for the first time since 2007) along with the new “Cincinnati Stripe.” I really like the geometry of these shoulder and pant stripes. As I said in my predictor last week, Cincinnati has a really great and simple uniform identity. These have enough small changes to really reel tailored, but enough simplicity to encourage mixing combos while maintaining said identity. They spiced it up even more by adding their “Cincy” script logo on the lid (a more color-corrected, gloss-painted lid, I might add) and chest wordmark, the first time they’ve ever worn script on a helmet. Really great improvement for UC! This combo is now 2-2 since 2021, the other loss being vs Tulane in 2022.
University of Central Florida Knights vs Jacksonville State Gamecocks (UCF Wins, 17-10)
UCF: White/White/White (Link)
JAX: Red/Black/Black (Link)
This is the first time JAX has travelled the 500+ miles south to face UCF, and we saw the return of Scott Frost in this rain-delayed, trench-battle whiteout game. There were blocked FGs, penalties, a GRUELING 17 play, 50 yd drive th…
