The TL/DR on this game was real simple. UCLA’s defense had no answers for the Utes offense.
Utah had a 20 play, 80 yard, nearly 10 minutes of position TD drive and a 5 play, 50 yard, 2:12 TD drive, and seemingly every type of scoring drive in between. Devon Dampier, the transfer QB from New Mexico, was practically unstoppable, as the Utes finished with 492 total yards of offense including 206 in the air and an additional 87 on the ground by Dampier. The Utes, as a team, ran it for a total of 286 yards.
Utah got the ball first and wasted no time setting the tone and theme of the game by marching 75 yards on 11 plays and scoring on a Wayshawn Parker 13 yard TD run. The extra point was missed and that was about the only negative thing to happen to Utah’s offense all night.
UCLA’s 1st drive showed some promise as the well publicized transfer QB from Tennessee, Nico Iamaleava, led the Bruins to Utah’s 40 yard line. On 4th and 2 from the 40, Iamaleava’s pass was incomplete, and Utah took the ball back on the turnover on downs.
Utah’s 2nd drive looked like the first drive, with a well balanced mix of run and passing, capped by a Smith Snowden 8 yard TD run. This time the PAT was good and Utah had a 13-0 lead late in the 1st qtr.
After a UCLA 3 and out, The Utes had a quick strike drive of just 2:12 time of possession that was finished off by a Devon Dampier 14 yard TD pass. UCLA’s offense would then show some life. Their lone touchdown drive of 75 yards, was capped by a 19 yard Nico Iamaleava pass. Utah got back 3 points by kicking a FG to end the half and giving us a score of 23 - 7 at halftime. .
UCLA opened up the 3rd quarter with a FG drive, and then Utah put this game to sleep. The Utes would go on a 20 play, 80 yard, 9:44 time of possession touchdown drive. That was finished off on a 4th and goal, 2 yard TD run, by Devon Dampier. Everything after that drive was pretty academic.
Post game, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said about that drive: “Our front really took control of that drive, they had control the whole night, but that’s a statement drive. We can lean on you and oppose our will if we want.” And that is exactly what happened in this game.
A couple of stats to note:
Utah was 14 of 17 on 3rd downs and 1 for 1 on 4th downs.
Utah’s total time of possession was 37:28
