I recently binged the latest season after reading all the positive reviews and people saying it was back to form. Now I’m not saying it was bad, but I really didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected to.
One thing that I didn’t like was how some of the episodes leaned too much into pop culture references. In general, I usually don’t like humor that relies too much on them because they don’t tend to age well. We had the “is it cake?”, “rawdogging”, “hawk tuah girl” and slap fighting. Most of these already feel dated which I’m sure may have not been the case during writing.
That and we also had the parodies: The Bear, Succession, The Bachelor, The Rehearsal… They’ve done parodies before but all these in such a short season felt too much for me.
My favorite episode was “The Gang Gets Ready for Prime Time.” It’s the only one that reminded of the show’s peak and really what I expected the rest of the season to be like. Glenn Howerton delivers another stellar performance. On the other hand, I didn’t like the Abbott episode (it was better than the other one though), I didn’t care for ep 4 and ep 6 was the most bizarre one. It’s a callback to the underage drinking episode and it feels like nothing ever really happens. I don’t know if this is a result of one arc being stretched across 3 episodes or what.
All in all, it was an underwhelming experience for me. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but thought I’d just put a different perspective out there.
