England footballer hoped to secure rights over the name of his shivering match celebration, the ‘Cold Palmer’. Château Palmer has other ideas

The Premier League footballer Cole Palmer has become embroiled in a row with a prestigious French vineyard after attempting to trademark his “Cold Palmer” nickname and signature goal celebration. Palmer, who plays for England and Chelsea, had hoped to secure legal rights over the name and famous “shivering” celebration. He intended to use them to sell a range of products including clothes, food, toiletries, toys and diet drinks. But his application was met with an unexpected challenge from Château Palmer, a revered winery in the Margaux region in southwest France, because the 23-year-old footballer had also requested legal protection to market wine. A section of Palmer’s papers, submitted last year to the government’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO), read: “Alcoholic beverages; alcoholic fruit beverages; pre-mixed alcoholic beverages; wines; spirits; liqueurs; alcoholic energy drinks; low alcoholic beverages; none of the aforesaid including wines complying with the specifications of the PDO Champagne.”

The extent of Palmer’s interest in wine is unknown. Lawyers at the IPO will now rule on the opposition after receiving representations from both sides.

He first exhibited the “Cold Palmer” celebration at the heart of the dispute in December 2023 during Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Luton Town. It involves the famously “cool” midfielder feigning cold by rubbing his arms and puffing out his cheeks.

Palmer later revealed that the celebration had been inspired by Morgan Rogers, his former Manchester City teammate. Rogers had performed a similar move the week before for Middlesbrough in a match against West Bromwich Albion.

“My boy Morgz [Rogers] did one for Middlesbrough, so I told him I’d do it too if I scored,” Palmer said.
