I’m 4 episodes in to The Return and I want to bash my head against the wall
Whenever I talk to people about David Lynch and his work I tell them that I have trouble understanding what he’s trying to say a lot of the time. I didn’t understand Lost Highway and I didn’t understand Blue Velvet. The people I talk to tell me that it’s not about understanding it, it’s about feeling it. The only thing that Twin Peaks: The Return has made me felt so far is anger. It’s overly self-indulgent and masturbatory. I loved Twin Peaks and FWWM because I loved the characters and what they each represented, what they went through, who they loved and how everything would come together to create these beautiful emotional moments. I loved learning more and more about Laura Palmer, you’d assemble this jigsaw puzzle of her in your head and just when you thought that you had finished it, you’d find out that you’ve only built one of the corners. Right now I can’t find a single plot line or character I care about in The Return. I am 3 episodes in to an 18 episode series and there is almost no discernible plot. The editing is terrible, the dialogue is awful, some performances from supporting actors are terrible and the characters are shells of their former selves (why is Cooper acting like half his brain is missing???) This show is starting to broke me.
I’ve read online some thoughts that other people have said about this show; to not expect it to be the Twin Peaks that you knew and that it’s something different but this doesn’t just feel different, it’s not Twin Peaks at all. I feel sorry for the fans that waited 25 years for this only to have to wait week by week to watch some bullshit. It’s just a bunch of abstract nonsense. Yes, I am aware that I am being way too hard on this show right now and that I should wait until maybe a few more episodes to form an opinion but right now I’m angry and I need to get these thoughts out of my head.
