Is it widely known that My Name is Earl is about a man performing the 12 steps? It’s obvious to me as someone in recovery, but I guess it might not be apparent to someone who’s never gone through that.

Here’s why:

The List = Making Amends = Earl’s whole “karma” list mirrors Steps 8 & 9 in AA: making a list of all the people you’ve harmed and making amends to them wherever possible.

Recognition of Wrongdoing = The show opens with Earl admitting he’s done a lot of bad things and needs to change, a kind of Step 1 (“admitting powerlessness”) mixed with Step 4 (a “moral inventory”).

Spiritual-ish Principle = Earl doesn’t talk about God, but “karma” fills the same role that a Higher Power does in 12-step language.

Continuous Process = Just like recovery is ongoing, the show frames Earl’s journey as never-ending; no matter how much progress Earl makes, his options to make amends will never end. So he will be working on this disease forever

If you’re in recovery give it a watch if you need something to just relax to. It’s a funny and smart show and it goes by quick
