I genuinely hold the belief that if the Simpson did an entire season or even status quo shift where all the character aged up say 8 years so Bart would be 18, Lisa would be 16 and Maggie would be 9. Would probably do wonders for the show.
This thought has only been reinforced with the latest king of the hill season, having the characters logically age up leads to some interesting and engaging stories that just weren’t possible in the original run.
And the thing is it’s very clear that writers on the Simpsons have wanted to do this for ages, and it makes a lot of sense, I’d assume basically every single writer for probably the last 20 years have been fans of or grew up with the Simpsons. So the idea to age them up even symbolically is probably pretty strong.
For instance if you look at most of Bart’s story lines I’ve the past ‘little while’ you see that they probably fit a 16-21 year old better, and Lisa likewise has stories that would fit a 13-16 year old better.
Not to mention having an actual time skip happened would allow a re-examination of all the characters, deflanderise them and changing dynamics. Which I think would be a breath of fresh air.
On top of all that I genuinely don’t think there is a dedicated Simpsons fanbase that would be upset if they did this.
