I’ve been referred for free counselling under an outsourced scheme my employer works with. A receptionist/admin woman asked some background questions and I mentioned that I had received counselling 10+ years ago after I was raped. I disclosed that I was raped and she asked where it had happened. I stated that it was by a stranger at a party. She then asked ‘where you drunk?’. When I said not really she said ‘I just need to know if it was actually rape or not’. It shocked me and I felt like I had to defend myself by further explaining that the perpetrator was successfully charged and sentenced for it.
I’m just sat in shock after that call. I didn’t expect that kind of question to come from another woman. Was that an appropriate question to ask? It’s not the rape that I am seeking counselling for and it was just a part of my background history regarding my mental health.
