I need to rant. We've had a few experiences in the past few weeks that makes me want to punch a statist. But not really since NAP.

My girlfriend and her brother are trying to open a bank account together. They do not live in the same state. This lady at Chase says, without skipping a beat or realizing how fucking dumb she sounds, tells my gf that "Oh, can he just drive down to the branch and sign the form?". Yes, he'll take time out of his day at his job in Nashville paying $250k/year to sign a form in Atlanta during banking hours. PERFECTLY EASY. This lady knew my gf's brother lives 5 hours away before saying this.

Fast forward a week. I'm off to Wells Fargo to close a CD for an NPO I run the books for. The CD is maturing September 11th. Their "grace period" to close it is 7 days. I go in yesterday, and they tell me that I have to show up literally in those 7 days to close it or pay a fee that is more than all the interest paid on that CD!

Fast forward like yesterday. I'm dropping off a prepaid package at the post office. There is a sign that says this certain line is for pre-paid package drop off. I go and walk up, and at my usual post office, they'll scan it and give me a receipt with the tracking number. This POS working there looks at me waiting and goes "Why you waiting? Can't you read the sign? It says drop off. Why you waiting on me?".

What do these places have in common? They're basically government-run institutions. They either are places where customer service is irrelevant since all their jobs and existence is protected by Congress or there are so many regulations that the organization has to deal with that customer service is way at the bottom of the list of things they need to care about.

Compare with private institutions. UPS? I just drop off, get a friendly smile from the people working there, apologies for god forbid having to wait over 5 seconds for someone to help me, etc. Pretty standard in industries where customer service and repeat business is what keeps you afloat and not the government.

God I hope that USPS lady gets covid.
