To quote Patricia Highsmith

“What is suspense? I try to answer this question by saying a suspense story is one which the possibility of violence, even death, is close at all times”

And so we come to Alien Earth that with its opening episode has this in spades. I’m not going to elaborate further on the initial plot but more to ask a few questions about the need to suspend disbelief in order to buy-in to the suspense;

  1. In aliens, the soldiers have cameras yet for the “suspense” we have them split up and then two accosted by the robot, to succumb to insects that kill them. Is the tech not the same or superior to that of Aliens? This slight inconsistency annoyed me
  2. Why did they awaken for seemingly for only a few hours just to go back into stasis for the last 4 months and the crash? Seemed pointless. Especially the creepy guy whose creepiness doesn’t get explored.
  3. Do you send people into an immediate crash site with no clue as to the stability of said site/ship?

Finally a prediction, the fully robotic human is going to be a major problem. Almost invincible and with a child’s mind she and her fellow robots won’t be controlled. Which I’m excited for, I just hope it doesn’t deteriorate into cliche super hero territory
