2024 Season Recap

Entering the season with fans having no idea what to expect after a brutal collapse down the stretch in 2023 and HC Nick Sirianni presumed to be on the hot seat, the Eagles got off to an extremely clunky start. They opened with a weird game on a bad field in Brazil, but a win is a win. They suffered a bad loss after Saquon dropped a would’ve-been game-ending pass, rookie Quinyon Mitchell made multiple mental errors in a 2 minute drill, and Jalen Hurts threw a terrible INT to end the game. They stole a game in NO when a defensive miscommunication led to a 3 man collision on mesh and Goedert took a short pass 61 yards to set up the GW TD. That set up an absolutely brutal game in TB with the Birds missing both of their top WR. It’s fun to go back and read that Post Game Thread.

2 “bad” wins and 2 bad losses. If the Eagles had a later bye, the story of the 2024 season for not just the Eagles, but the entire NFL, may have been very, very different.

During the bye, star OL Lane, Mailata, and Dickerson went to Sirianni’s office and demanded he run the ball more. The team got healthy. This included not just the two WR who missed the TB game, but also Cooper DeJean, who suffered a hamstring injury before training camp that caused him to need extra time to learn the system and get into game shape. The result was arguably one of the best stretches of football the NFL has ever seen. An offense that saw Hurts attempt 30+ passes in each of the first four games saw him only attempt 30+ passes in a game once the rest of the season (including postseason). Saquon ran for 2K yards and only missed out on the all-time rushing record because the team decided to focus on the Super Bowl. Jalen Carter started playing every snap and turned into a one man wrecking crew. Quinyon locked in, eliminating the early mistakes. DeJean turned out to be the best nickel corner in the league the moment he stepped on the field. The only loss the Eagles suffered for the rest of the season occurred when Hurts was injured early against WAS and Gardner-Johnson was ejected and the Commies barely eked out a win.

The playoffs started with a relatively easy win over the Packers. In bad weather, the Rams nearly beat the Eagles, but Carter decided to singlehandedly save the season. After that, the Eagles locked in, absolutely obliterating the Commies 55-23 and the Chiefs 40-22. Both scores make the games look far closer than they actually were.

The Super Bowl Post Game Thread had a little different tone than the one after Week 4.

Coaching Changes

Coaches Lost

Kellen Moore OC Saints HC
Doug Nussmeier QB Saints OC

Coaches Hired/Promoted

Name 2024 Position 2025 Position
Kevin Patullo Eagles Pass Game Eagles OC
Scot Loeffler Bowling Green HC Eagles QB
Parks Frazier Dolphins Off. Ass. Eagles Pass Game
Greg Austin Jaguars Ass. OL Eagles Ass. OL
Tyler Yelk Eagles Quality Control Eagles Defensive Assistant
Montgomery VanGorder Georgia Ass. QB Eagles Off. Quality Control
Cole Peterson UAB Executive Director Eagles Assistant to Head Coach

I think I got all the changes. Apologies if I got something wrong there. The most notable changes are replacing Moore and Nussmeier with Patullo, Loeffler, and Frazier. There is no real expectation that the offense is going to change in any meaningful way. Austin previously worked with Stoutland in Philly during the Chip Kelly era. I couldn’t tell you what Yelk, VanGorder, and Peterson are actually doing. Ultimately, it is unlikely that the change in coaching staff will affect much, but Eagles fans will certainly jump all over Patullo if the offense takes a step back. It remains to be seen whether Patullo will go back to the offense that wasn’t working for the Eagles at the start of 2024 or stick with the extremely run heavy philosophy that carried them for the rest of the season.

Notable Player Movement

Losses

Player Position New Team
Milton Williams DT Patriots
Josh Sweat DE Cardinals
Bryce Huff DE Niners
Mekhi Becton RG Chargers
Darius Slay CB Steelers
Isaiah Rodgers CB Vikings
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson FS Texans

The Eagles are a very good team with a lot of very good players. That means the Eagles had to make a lot of business decisions. Williams, Sweat, Becton, and Rodgers were all out of the Eagles’ price range to re-sign. Huff was a bust and a dump. Slay was cut and Gardner-Johnson were traded due to cap reasons as well. While the Eagles are under the cap, they will need the rollover cap to be able to afford all of the big contracts looming on the horizon.

Additions

Player Position Old Team
AJ Dillon RB Packers
Kylen Granson TE Colts
Harrison Bryant TE Raiders
Matt Pryor RG Bears
Kendall Lamm OT Dolphins
Azeez Ojulari ED Giants
Josh Uche ED Chiefs
Ogbo Okoronkwo ED Browns
Patrick Johnson ED Giants
Adoree’ Jackson CB Giants
Charley Hughlett LS Browns

These are all the FAs the Eagles signed who have a chance to make the 53 man roster. All of these players were signed to small 1 year deals. Not an exciting FA period.

Note: If you want a more full write-up of each pick, you can check out my Defending the Draft write-up on the NFL_Draft subreddit. I am going to focus largely on the players who are likely to play a role in the Eagles’ 2025 season.

Jihaad Campbell - A very athletic, very raw prospect who largely played LB but took some snaps at ED, Campbell was projected to go top 20 before bad medicals caused him to drop. The Eagles were not scared off by those medicals and were rewarded when Campbell was ready for the start of Training Camp. Campbell is very young, having just turned 21 in February, and his youth was reflected in his play. When he could use his athleticism and physical gifts, he was an absolute monster, consistently beating lesser guys to spots and making big play after big play. However, his instincts and reactions are not where you would want them to be for an NFL starter. Reports out of training camp reflect the inconsistency, and given the Eagles extreme lack of edge depth behind their starters, it would not be surprising to see Campbell spend more time at ED than LB in his rookie season. Still, the long-term outlook for Campbell is very exciting, even if it may take a season or two for the mental part of his game to catch up with the physical.

Drew Mukuba - With Gardner-Johnson out of the picture, the Eagles have a gaping hole at FS. Mukuba is as pure a FS as it gets. After spending much of his college career playing in the slot, Mukuba transferred to Texas, where he led the SEC in INTs with 5. There are concerns about his size and ability to help in the run game, but he is about as direct a replacement for Gardner-Johnson as the Eagles could’ve found. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury in Training Camp and hasn’t been able to practice much, but he’ll have a very good chance to win the job if he can get back on the field soon.

Ty Robinson - A DT with a great athletic profile who blossomed at Nebraska as a 6th year senior. This pick was a calculated risk - the Eagles were very aware this may have just been a case of a 6th year player overwhelming much younger and less experienced players, but maybe he just figured it out late. Early returns are not promising, but with the trade of Thomas Booker, Robinson will make the roster as the DT5.

Mac McWilliams - McWilliams is an extremely undersized CB. Despite his size, he played almost only outside CB in college. His college tape shows a guy who is very good at tracking and mirroring receivers and fighting the ball at the catch point to prevent clean catches. Reports out of camp are that McWilliams is having a very strong camp playing both outside CB and inside CB, even winning battles against CBs much bigger and taller than him. With neither Jackson nor Ringo staking a strong claim to a starting CB job yet and looking quite bad in the first preseason game, Mac Mac has a chance to steal the CB2 job, though he’ll ha…
