I decided to finally check out the show after seeing all the multiple posts praising the show and sharing its IMDb ratings (which I’ve never accused any show of astroturfing and I’m not saying this one is but…). The other reason I caved in was the completely stacked cast: Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, Eric Stonestreet, David Dastmalchian. Like wtf! Of course I still knew to temper my expectations and went in expecting a decent show, and that’s exactly what I got. I’ll do my best to avoid spoilers.

There’s a lot of interesting moving parts and I’m curious to see how it all plays out. But with that also comes silly and illogical things that pop out when you start to think about it too much. You can really tell they tried their best to retcon New Blood’s ending and introduce this new setting. People say the original run is dumb, yeah, but I don’t think we ever got something as ridiculous as a serial killer club (this was already revealed in the trailers but just in case).

I am enjoying this more than New Blood. Harrison seems to be better here, or maybe that’s just cause he has less screentime. And what happened to Deb? Why did they switch back to Harry for Dexter’s hallucinations? Was the actress unavailable? Harry is still good though. Michael C Hall is great as always. I do wish the star studded cast was utilized better.

How does it stack up against the original? I’m not entirely sure. It’s been a while since I rewatched the show. Be that as it may, I don’t feel like it hits the highs of the earlier seasons but it’s definitely not as bad as the last couple of seasons. I also miss the Miami setting paired with the gritty, warm, saturated look. It’s not a dealbreaker but I do miss it and you realize how stark the difference is whenever they incorporate old footage from those seasons.

Anyway, do I think it’s a masterpiece like the scores posted on here seem to imply? No. Do I think it’s an alright show with some fun stuff here and there? Yeah.

Oh I almost forgot, why the hell are they doing that spoilery teaser shit at the start like in New Blood? It’s quick as shit too so if you forget to skip it you just wind up getting spoiled before you can hit fast forward.
