A tragic, emotional love story is really not what I expected going into Edgerunners. I was a little skeptical about the show, and had kinda unfairly written it off as a cash grab. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of my all-time favourite games (post changes and updates ofc) and I absolutely love the world of Night City so my expectations were pretty high.

The audiovisual style is what jumps out at you at first. The art and animation are seriously impressive (par for the course for Trigger I guess) - highly stylized and slightly exaggerated with some impressive direction. The accuracy with which they capture the visual “language” of the game’s UI is pretty incredible as well - stuff like the phone call ringtones and hacking screens look lifted out of the game. Action scenes are dynamic, creative and gory as fuck. The soundtrack and overall use of music are incredible.

The overall plot and atmosphere are also a perfect encapsulation of the Cyberpunk world, with the narrative getting a little deeper and darker each episode, and faithfully developing another slice of the Night City from the game.

But what really elevated the show for me is the tragic love story between David and Lucy. It felt so human, and simultaneously wholesome and melancholy. It’s about two lost souls finding comfort and solace in each other in a dark, cruel world that holds little hope for those who live in it. You desperately want them to make it but you know that it’s not going to happen. The ending is bittersweet, in true Cyberpunk fashion, and I have to admit that it left me feeling quite empty and emotional.

I’m really excited for season 2 and look forward to seeing the kind of stories they can tell in this world.
