I decided I should get another credit card. To do that, your name has to be the same as what the credit reporting companies have. Sure, that makes sense. I fully understand why. My issue is that every step of the way I have been presented with obstacles. To change my last name back to my maiden name with Experian I have to:

To process your request, please send copies of the following documents:

  • Social Security Card
  • A copy of a state-issued ID
  • Letter requesting the name change
  • Legal document of name change

Also make sure to include a cover letter with:

  • A description of your issue
  • Case number: xxxx

Please fax the documents to Experian Consumer Affairs (ECA) at xxx or mail them to the following address.

Again, I understand why. I just wish I’d never changed it in the first place. I’ve had to do a list like this, or something similar, to change my name at the bank, at the Social Security office, on insurance documents, on investment accounts, at work, at the DMV for both my license and the registration for my car (two different trips), on my voter registration, etc.

So, TLDR is don’t change your name when you get married and you’ll never have to change it back.
