There have been a number of posts across news outlets yesterday and today following the Channel 4 Dispatches documentary which aired on Saturday evening. The comments sections are being flooded with conspiracy theories about the mainstream media, comments denigrating those who have come forward, flat denials and just nonsense to try to drive any meaningful comments out of sight.
I’ve seen denial before, and people defending their favourite celebs, but this is on a scale I’ve never seen. It really has opened my eyes to how popular organised right wing misogyny is becoming. It is also making me reflect on the fact that Saville’s victims could never have got justice while he was alive because of exactly this type of inane hero worship celebrity culture - the “I admire this man and therefore he couldn’t possibly be a predator” mentality.
