Rankings are quite volatile during the first half of the season, and I’m seeing comments of confused redditors stating that “x” team gets to claim “x” victory and is why they should be ranked higher.
The only rankings that matter are the current set, not preseason rankings with outdated information.
A perfect example of this is Texas’s victory over Alabama. Texas currently has a great win over the #13 team, not the #3 ranking that Alabama had during the game. If Alabama keeps winning then Texas’s win will appreciate.
Another example is Ohio State beating “#5” ND last year. Ohio State couldn’t claim a #5 victory, because as the weeks went on everyone realized ND was overrated and shouldn’t have been 5 to begin with.
These old rankings do matter for historical or record purposes, but not in determining who is better than who.
