Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Shoutout to: r/Buccaneers

Division: NFCS - The NFC Trash Mountain

2024 results: 10-7, 1st in the NFCS for the 4th straight time, but sadly ended with a wildcard exit vs the Commanders in a pretty close game. Just a few bad plays from us cost us big.

Notable Coaching/Front Office Departures:

Coach Position New Team New Position
Liam Coen Offensive Coordinator Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach
John Van Dam Pass Game Assistant Jacksonville Jaguars Pass Game Specialist
Kacy Rodgers Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Detroit Lions Defensive Line
John Spytek Assistant General Manager Oakland Raiders General Manager

Liam Coen agreed to return as the offensive coordinator for Tampa, and fans were relieved, for once in his career Baker Mayfield would have the same OC for two straight seasons! Things are looking up and our offense should be a powerhouse again!

Oh wait actually, it turns out that Liam Coen was using us a leverage, never signed anything and not even 24 hours after it was reported he had verbally agreed to return to Tampa, he was announced as the HC for Jacksonville.

This sparked quite a shit show in r/Buccaneers and r/Jaguars with both sides understandably trying to justify their takes. In the heat of the moment I was furious, but now that the dust has long settled I’m hoping Jacksonville can finally have a season their fans deserve. (A successful one if that’s not clear no hate to the fans, still love you Florida bros). I can’t fault Liam for taking the promotion, I do think he handled the situation extremely poorly and burned a lot of bridges and scorned Tampa fans, but if he works out in Jacksonville then it’ll be mostly forgotten about anyhow. Except for that awkward Duval, that shit was hilarious.

John Spytek was a huge part of our front office, and has been for a long while. He was a key part of the draft scouting team and very close to Jason Licht. We fans expected to lose both him and Mike Greenberg this offseason as they had both been tapped for GM positions. Thankfully Greenberg opted to stay this year but I imagine he’ll be gone in the next season or two assuming a good GM spot opens up. Spytek left with grace, him and Licht are still on great terms and I think the Raiders are in good hands the next few years if Spytek is able to replicate the draft success that Tampa has had under Licht. Raiders, you got a good dude here.

I’m not sure about losing Kacy Rodgers to Detroit. He was viewed very positively here, but our defensive line has been underperforming the past few seasons, though it might have more to do with injuries and lack of premiere edge talent. Doesn’t feel like a huge loss, but I imagine he’ll have a blast coaching up Hutch in Detroit.

Notable Coaching Hires:

Coach Position Old Team New Position
Josh Grizzard Offensive Coordinator Internal Promotion Offensive Coordinator
Kefense Hynson Wide Receivers Coach & Pass Game Coordinator Oregon State Pass Game Coordinator
Kevin Carberry Offensive Line Internal Promotion Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line
Brian Picucci Assistant Offensive Line Coach Internal Promotion Offensive Line Coach
George Edwards Outside Linebackers Internal Promotion Defensive Pass Game Coordinator
Charlie Strong Defensive Analyst Alabama Defensive Line Coach

Lots of internal promotions here, which was great to see. Lot of continuity across the board and in theory our offensive should not struggle to much adapting to the scheme Grizz wants to run. The biggest question marks lie with out defense. Can the changes we made with the coaching staff spark some fire in our defense? We’ve had a very middle of the road defense the last few years and the once vaunted Bowles turnover heavy defense has been severely lacking in the explosive plays department. Due in part to injury but also underperformance on the defensive line and in the secondary.

Fun side note, because of the bridges he burned, Liam Coen was denied two interview requests with Brian Picucci and Kevin Carberry as they were viewed as lateral moves. This sparked a back and forth with our team subs about how our front office were a bunch of bastards for not letting these guys take more money and promotions. Which aged poorly as we promoted those guys to the positions the Jags wanted them for anyhow.

Players lost/cut

Player Position New Team
KJ Britt LB Miami Dolphins
Mike Edwards S Kansas City Chiefs
Robert Hainsey C Jacksonville Jaguars
Royce Newman G Arizona Cardinals
Joe Tryon-Shoyinka OLB Cleveland Browns
Tavierre Thomas CB Minnesota Vikings
Shaquil Barrett OLB Free Agent
Chase Edmonds RB Free Agent
William Gholston DL Free Agent
Troy Hill CB Free Agent
Ryan Neal s Free Agent
Jordan Whitehead S Free Agent

No major losses here to be honest. A lot of these guys were depth/role players, or guys that just have not lived up to their draft spot (JTS). Hainsey should be a solid center for the Jags, but there’s a reason we replaced him.

Shaq Barrett was a puzzling signing last year after the whole debacle with him unretiring from the Dolphins. He played two games with us one of them being the Wildcard loss, but a dude coming off the couch all year was never going to be a huge role player. Felt like a desperation move to give out D line some life last year. Remains to be seen if we’ll sign him to another small one year deal.

We were all excited bringing Jordan Whitehead and Mike Edwards back, but Mike Edwards appears to be a shadow of his 2020 self, and Jordan Whitehead got in a car accident (reportedly his fault for careless driving) and apparently broke his neck. This whole story was wildly underreported on and we haven’t heard anything since January about it. I hope he (and the others in the accident) is okay, but I don’t imagine he’ll be suiting up in Tampa again at the very least.

In 2023 and 2024 Will Gholston signed 1 year deals with us to return. He’s a career Buc and probably the best Buc who isn’t a star/household name. Dude has been incredibly reliable as a run defender for us since 2013, but he is getting older and his numbers are dwindling fast. Only 1 sack since 2022 and only 31 total tackles between 2022 & 2023. I would not be surprised if he just calls it a career at this point. Reportedly Gholston took a coaching job for a high school team, but he’s a guy I could see us calling up mid-season if we have a injury spot needing to be filled.

Biggest outside free agent signing came with Haason Reddick. A name most Bucs fans might have floated as a ‘would be nice to have on a short deal but probably won’t happen’. So when it did happen we were pretty surprised! The media at large was really hoping he’d stand us up like he did the Jets for a bit so there would be some drama to write about, but thus far Reddick seems excited to be here and ready to try and earn what could potentially be his final big contract. Bucs fans are just hoping this move pans out like the JPP signing in 2019 did for us.

The other big news was Chris Godwin returning. Every Bucs fan hoped he would and we are incredibly happy that he chose to stay with us. There were various reports of him turning down much larger contracts from other teams to stay in Tampa which gives us all the warm fuzzies. Godwin is a certified dude and Tampa loves him to death.

Lavonte David, the most underrated dude in the NFL the past 13 years also signed another 1 year deal. He’s at the point in his career where we all know it won’t last much longer, but he keeps producing at a phenomenal level every year and sets the standard for the defense. I’m 100% on board to keep paying him as long as he wants to keep playing for us.

We re-signed a lot of other guys and mostly made some depth signings, Ben Bredeson returning will help keep continuity on the offensive line, we have some high hopes that Anthony walker can become a serviceable LB as we are definitely we are pretty thin at that positio…
