Strange as it may seem, I was actually kind of sympathetic to Leno during the whole thing. I prefer Conan, but I was kind of annoyed at the idea that we had to root for him because he’s the underdog. I was thinking that Jay was like an underdog in reverse, in that his status as whatever the opposite of an underdog is made him such a punching bag that I felt kind of sorry for him. Also, as much of a comedy legend as Conan is now I doubt he’d ever have gotten good ratings at The Tonight Show; just look at the fact that after 4 years at TBS he was still trailing The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. NBC’s who I blame for the whole thing; if they’d just committed to one of them instead of keeping trying to have it both ways they wouldn’t have had to face the debacle they’d created.
