I’ve been seeing a number of posts here and on other subreddits recently about choking during intimacy. In these posts, it’s usually noted that choking is a “red flag” in a partner and a warning sign of future violence from that partner. This is absolutely true, but I don’t think enough attention is being given to the medical side of this conversation. The reality is that young women are having their quality of life permanently changed by this act.
Here’s what you should know:
- Evidence suggests that strangulation may be the second most common cause of stroke in women under 40
- Neurological consequences of strangulation include: loss of consciousness, paralysis, movement disorders, speech disorders, incontinence, and seizures which can be delayed by weeks.
- Despite the potential for delayed harm, only 9% of women who have experienced strangulation report it to hospital staff.
- Certain forms of birth control and smoking further increase the risk of stroke.
It’s also important to note that the risks of choking are the same whether you’ve consented or not. If you actively (and enthusiastically) engage in this, you and your partner need to know the risks.
If you have been unexpectedly choked by a partner - you should notify a medical professional if you are able.
