Since the start of the NFL, there have been 531 head coaches. Of them, only 121 (23%) won their last game coached. Not only that, nearly half of those 121 coaches coached 32 or fewer games and 20% of them didn’t even coach 10 games. Not a lot of long-term coaches finish on a high note. However, there were some notable head coaches that did finish their career on a win, including: Brian Billick, Jim Caldwell, Bill Cowher, Jason Garrett, George Halas, Gary Kubiak, John Madden, Jim Mora Sr, Chuck Noll, Dan Reeves, Dick Vermeil, and Bill Walsh.
Greats like Bill Belichick, Paul Brown, Joe Gibbs, Curly Lambeau, Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, Bill Parcells, and Don Shula all went out with a loss. Same with Tom Coughlin, Tony Dungy, Jeff Fisher, Dennis Green, Chuck Knox, Mike McCarthy, Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Shanahan. You name it, he probably ended on a loss.
Among active head coaches? There are eight current head coaches who won their most recent game: Dave Canales, Pete Carroll, Jonathan Gannon, Mike Macdonald, Nick Sirianni, Shane Steichen, Zac Taylor, and Mike Vrabel. The rest lost (except coaches for the Bears, Cowboys, Jaguars, Saints, and Jets, who have never coached before).
For the sake of completion, there have been 11 head coaches who tied their last game, but aside from Lou Rymkus in 1961, they were all World War II era or earlier.
