Boise State (high = 19, low = 47) at #35 means we’re only 5 weeks from O’Farmageddon (or does Farm O’Geddon work better?). The Broncos are projected to be the fifth highest rated conference champion, coming in 11 spots higher than Tulane at #6 there, and thus are in the pole position to lock up one of the 12 CFP bids this season. Spencer Danielson gets ready to enter his second full season as Boise State’s head coach, and he’s set the bar amazingly high by steering the Broncos to an 11-1 regular season with only a 3 point loss at eventual 1-seed Oregon, a Mountain West championship, the #3 seed in the CFP and a Fiesta Bowl loss to Penn State. They also made a strong case for Ashton Jeanty to win the Heisman Trophy, ultimately seeing him become the runner-up.
Roster outlook
Let’s just go ahead and point out the obvious – Boise State is going to have to replace Ashton Jeanty, who was the 6th overall pick in the NFL draft (and the first RB taken) by the Las Vegas Raiders. Even with that in mind, the Broncos rank 9th in the country in returning production, including on the offensive side of the ball. Their only other losses of note on offense are WR Cameron Camper, who signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Prince Strachan, who transferred to USC. On defense, they return leading tackler FS Ty Benefield. Danielson brought in the top recruiting class in the Mountain West (good for 62nd nationally), but with only 12 transfer players coming in, finished with the 103rd portal class in the country. That did include Fresno State RB Malik Sherrod and a couple of projected defensive starters, including ND CB Jaden Mickey. Think that will come in handy when the Broncos head to South Bend on October 4?
Schedule and outlook
With the #35 ranking, the Broncos project to be favored in every game other than their road tilt at Notre Dame. Though it probably doesn’t matter what their conference schedule is, they do get projected #2 MWC team UNLV on the smurf turf and don’t play the 3rd highest ranked conference team in San Jose State. For good measure, two of their OOC games are at home against Appalachian State, who is usually in the running for the Sun Belt title, and open on the road at South Florida. Winning those games would give them wins over what has become the other two highest ranked G5 conferences, though neither should probably be looked at as automatic wins. I’m biased, but I think that opener has the potential to be more competitive than most people are considering. Barring an upset in the MWC championship game or perhaps that USF game, it would be a surprise to not see Boise exit the Mountain West with one last title and a CFP bid.
