How much does series competitiveness play into the perception of a rivalry? I’m curious how this plays out in win/loss records for other fanbases.

I personally consider UVA, WVU, and Miami to be our biggest rivals, followed by Georgia Tech, then maybe Pitt or Syracuse. And I was curious how closely that aligned with series histories. Consulting Winsipedia and looking at teams we’ve played 15 times or more (minus a couple defunct programs), here are the 5 closest series VT has:

  1. Pitt: 12-11 (.522)
  2. Maryland: 15-17 (.469)
  3. NC State: 28-20-4 (.538)
  4. UNC: 25-14-6 (.556)
  5. Syracuse: 9-12 (.429)

WVU (23-30-1) is number 6 in closeness, GT (12-8) is close behind, but then Miami (15-26) and UVA (62-38-5) are quite a bit down the list.
