The closest thing the NFL has to baseball’s Triple Crown is the receiving Triple Crown (leading in catches, rec yds, and rec TDs). Wide receiver seems to be the only position which we have an official agreed upon Triple Crown criteria. I wanted to see which running backs have won a Triple Crown, so I settled on these three stats: rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and yards/attempt. It’s arbitrary, one might say yards from scrimmage stats would be better, or total carries, touches, or something else. But I went with these three since, for better or for worse, they seem to be the most historically relied on stats by fans. What makes the rushing Triple Crown so hard is that leading the league in rushing TDs is generally going to suppress yards per carry because they are probably getting a lot of carries inside the 5-yard line.
The running back Triple Crown is also a dying achievement because of changes in the game. The modern game has seen more quarterbacks running the ball effectively. More often than not, a quarterback is going to lead the league in yards per carry, even with the minimum required carries to qualify. In this century, a quarterback led the NFL in yards/carry 14 out of 25 times. That’s 14 times that a chance for a Triple Crown is eliminated. The last rushing Triple Crown winner was Terrell Davis in 1998 when he won the MVP.
Here is the list!
