A few days ago, I made a post listing which players have the most 2nd Team All-Pro Selections. That list, however, counted 2nd Team All-Pro selections made by non-AP publications. Because the Associated Press is considered to be the most prestigious selector, I decided to redo that list to count only 2nd Team All-Pro selections from the AP.
This lists includes all players with at least 4 Second Team All-Pro Selections from the AP. This list goes from 1940 (the year AP started selecting All-Pros) through the 2024 season. All data is taken from Pro Football Reference:
6× 2nd Team All-Pro (4)
- Doug Atkins
- Mike Haynes
- Mike Munchak
- Steve Wisniewski*
5× 2nd Team All-Pro (12)
- Maxie Baughan*
- Marvin Harrison
- Rickey Jackson+
- Alex Karras
- Logan Mankins*
- C.J. Mosley+
- Jonathan Ogden
- Willie Roaf
- Bob St. Clair+
- Bobby Wagner
- Reggie White
- Marshal Yanda*
4× 2nd Team All-Pro (32)
- David Akers*
- Champ Bailey
- Bob Baumhower*
- Robert Brazile
- Drew Brees
- Derrick Brooks
- Ruben Brown*+
- Harry Carson+
- Ray Childress*
- Demario Davis
- Joe DeLamielleure
- Tony Gonzalez
- Dan Hampton
- Steve Largent
- Kevin Mawae
- Mike McCormack+
- Tim McDonald*+
- Von Miller
- Ozzie Newsome
- Don Paul*
- Jason Peters
- Mel Renfro*
- Les Richter
- Andy Robustelli
- Barry Sanders
- Darren Sharper*
- Will Shields
- Justin Simmons+
- Jackie Slater+
- Rohn Stark*
- Ernie Stautner
- Charles Woodson
*Eligible but not in Hall of Fame
+Never received a First-team All-Pro selection
Italics active player/ineligible for Hall of Fame
For comparison, when looking AP 1st Team All-Pros, I found,
- 1 player with 10× selections
- 1 player with 9× selections
- 9 players with 8× selections
- 17 players with 7× selections
- 27 players with 6× selections
- 43 players with 5× selections
- 51 players with 4× selections
In other words, it seems harder to consistently be selected to the 2nd team compared to the 1st team. Getting 2nd team selections might get easier in the future, though, the advent of the second place vote.
