During a Week 1 game against Northern Illinois, NIU head coach Thomas Hammock remarked to a sideline reporter that he was forced to burn a first half timeout due to malfunctioning headsets.
During Week 2 game against Holy Cross, coach Bob Chesney remarked after the game that his team was without functioning headsets for a quarter and a half because the power went out in “just this one box” (Noting that the power in the BC boxes was working just fine.) Holy Cross was forced t have their coordinators operate from the sideline during the first half, leaving them without eyes in the sky.
Because both NIU and Holy Cross are not ACC opponents, Boston College was allowed to continue to use their headsets despite their opponents being at a disadvantage. Their is a rule stipulating that if one team is without functioning headsets, both teams must operate without headsets until the issue is rectified, but this only applies to conference games.
Yeah, sure, this isn’t fishy or anything. Coach Chesney even remarked that it was up to Boston College “ethically” whether or not they wanted to go without headsets, and of course, they didn’t. Not a good look for a supposedly Jesuit school, but these are the actions of a man desperate to save his job (Hafley.) This tactic won’t apply to FSU, who will decimate BC regardless, but Jim Mora and UConn should be on the lookout for this issue in advance when they head to Chestnut Hill in Week 8.
