What I’m specifically referring to is the moment in the Bojack Horseman episode “Free Churro” where Bojack describes the show Becker as having all the right pieces, but it just couldn’t ever put them together. He watched the show from start to finish in the hope that it would get better, and was disappointed that it never quite did.
Regardless of whether you agree with that take on Becker, what is your own equivalent show? The one which you hoped would match its potential, but for whatever reason just never did.
For me, that show is the short-lived Edward Burns cop series Public Morals. Edward Burns has always interested me as an indie filmmaker who stuck to his scrappy low-budget roots rather than sell out. When I heard he was teaming with Spielberg’s production company to make a period-piece cop drama for TNT, I was excited that he’d have a chance to get more attention.
Public Morals had a lot going for it, too. Some fantastic actors, a talented filmmaker at the helm, great music, a plethora of interesting characters, and one of the most memorable TV theme songs I’ve yet heard. But for me, the show was juggling too many storylines, some of which were not working at all. Plus the dialogue wasn’t always top notch either. I was hoping that Burns could get the chance to improve the show with a second season, but it didn’t happen.
