So the thread about the loudest got me to thinking about a story I’ve told a lot in my life. I grew up in Miami going to Hurricanes games, back when they were the team of the decade and won the natty in '83, '87, '89 and '91, or whatever.
My dad’s friend, an alum, had great seats on the 50 yard line. We went to almost every home game in the old rickety-ass orange bowl.
I was there when Doug Flutie threw one of the most famous hail marys in the history of college football to win the game.
And in the ensuing shock and chaos that happened afterwards… it was the absolute quietest I’ve ever seen (heard) that many people be.
You ever go to an event where someone asks for a “moment of silence” and you hear sneezing, and rustling around you, and someone’s shoe hits something or scuffs the floor…?
In the immediate moment after the catch, the stadium was so quiet that I could hear plastic beer cups rolling down the metal stairs… from across the stadium. Those plastic cups, clack, clack, clack… for a moment that seemed like 15 seconds by was probably only 4… was the only sound (other than the whistle on the field).
It was dead quiet, and it was an experience that is impossible to forget.
