UCLA (high = 47, low = 62) is next up on the countdown at #52. The Bruins inaugural season in the B1G was not what fans and new head coach DeShaun Foster hoped for in following up Chip Kelly’s run of 3 consecutive bowl games on their way out of the Pac-12, but with a schedule that followed the season opener at Hawaii with three games against eventual playoff teams plus LSU in Death Valley, it probably wasn’t entirely unexpected. Will the Bruins come out of their hibernation in 2025?

Roster outlook

As several posters are fond of pointing out, returning production isn’t necessarily a good thing if the team wasn’t very good, so when I say UCLA ranks ahead of only Purdue in the B1G, you can take that for what you consider it worth. That includes the bottom 10 on defense, but they do have to replace QB Ethan Garbers (now with the Carolina Panthers), RB TJ Harden (SMU), top WR Logan Loya (University of Minnesota) and TE Moliki Matavao (New Orleans Saints), not to mention virtually every single player who made a tackle on defense. Foster (and presumably whatever collective is backing UCLA) went out and brought in the #20 portal class in the country (5th in the B1G), the biggest name of which is infamous QB Nico Iamaleava (and his brother Madden). They also added former Cal RB Jaivian Thomas and WR Mikey Matthews, plus 4 P4 DBs.

Schedule and outlook

If the infusion of talent comes together, Foster and the Bruins should be able to get off to a decent start. They open with a former Pac-12 After Dark worthy game against Utah in the Rose Bowl, then go to UNLV and host New Mexico. If they can get out of those first three at no worse than 2-1 (with a real chance at 3-0), they go to Northwestern to play in their makeshift stadium. After a home game against Penn State, they go to Michigan State and host Maryland. There’s a very real chance they could be 6-1 (and bowl eligible) before their rougher back half (@ Indiana and Ohio State, home against Nebraska and Washington before the season finale against USC in the Coliseum). Seems like bowling in 2025 would be a good goal for year 2 of Foster’s people.
