METHODOLOGY

Link to more detailed writeup on our methodology

  • Step 1: A Call to Rankers right after the Conference Championship games
  • Step 2: Rankers from each team nominated players to rank, with a 11 game minimum threshold. Players are associated with the team they played for in 2024
  • Step 3: The Grind. We instructed users to tier positions groups into T25, T50, etc based on 2024 regular season play only. This took several weeks as the rankers tiered each position group and discussed them. There were no individual player threads and no arbitrary position caps. Just questions and rankings.
  • Step 4: Users submitted their own personal Top 125 lists.
  • Step 5: User lists were reviewed by myself and u/mattkud . The rankers were expected to answer questions about their lists. They were allowed to make any changes to their list, and were not forced to make any changes
  • Step 6: The Reveal… where we are now!

And without further ado, here are the players ranked 20-11 in the r/NFL Top 100 Players of the 2024 Season!

#20 - TJ Watt - Pittsburgh Steelers - EDGE Rusher

When writing for TJ Watt last year, I said – and I quote, for the sake of being honest – “Can TJ Watt stay handle business again and get his overdue 2nd DPOY? OF COURSE HE CAN. TRENT JORDAN WATT IS INEVITABLE.”

In a year where seemingly every single other high-profile defender randomly died (non exhaustive list), Watt seemed to be in cruise control and well on his way to further decorating his shelf. Until, of course, he too ran afoul of the NFL deities against the Eagles late in the season and limped (literally) to a quiet end to the season. It was a rather unfortunate draw for Watt, especially right before an offseason with contract talks. But that IS part of the game, and everyone is always sort of injured. TJ Watt did not win DPOY, and while he’s probably not happy about it, he also didn’t earn it this year.

All of the above can be true, and so can this - some of y’all forgot just who you’re dealing with. I’ve been hearing some truly heinous accusations, and I’m here to set the record straight.

20th? Old? Washed? Watt? The guy who led the entire league in forced fumbles? The guy who finished 2nd in the league in TFL, even matching his own mark from last year? We’ve all seen years worth of chasedown strip sacks from Watt, maybe you all got bored of it? What’s even to like anyways about watching a generational player make massive highlight reel plays and single handedly call game a few times each season, anyways? Fine, we’re all about analytics now. You want that? He’s the guy PFF says was the #1 edge run defender (see? I do like PFF, when they agree with me).

You wanna actually see him run defend? Sure, lets make the whole writeup about it. Look at the speed with which Watt identifies this run against the Chargers and completely neuters it. Or how about him setting the edge against the Raiders and performing a textbook flawless punch out. And how about another against the Raiders where he forces the RB inside just to poke the ball out. Here’s one I like that doesn’t show up on a highlight reel, but was posted on this subreddit - Watt running up to stop Hurts on a 23 yard run. If he doesn’t immediately turn heel on Lane Johnson and start running back the second he does (and it’s truly beautiful how fast he does this, there’s practically no delay from Hurts running to Watt reversing) this is the freest TD run of Jalen Hurts’ career that doesn’t involve several large men behind him. Here’s Watt working his way around Johnson (that guy is pretty good, in case you didn’t know) to stonewall Barkley. I often hear that “TJ Watt goes unblocked” as a way to discredit his stats, as if that is just something that randomly happens only to him and no one is quite sure why. This happens to nearly every EDGE in the league at some point or another. The problem is that TJ Watt is not normal and that EDGE rushers are not supposed to move this fast. I’ve referenced this video quite a bit. Everything that I’ve shown you here he’s done multiple times, and it even also includes the entire other half of his game in pass rushing. Wow! Here’s a short list for some for essential viewing:

  • Full breakdown of TJ Watt vs Lane Johnson (excellent video that honestly shows more of how insane Lane is than anything, but sometimes you gotta give props. Lest we remember that Watt had 2 sacks and a FF this game while only playing 2/3rds snaps due to the injury!)
  • TJ Watt and the Steelers bully the Falcons in Week 1
  • Not this year again, but Watt punching Sam Darnold in the balls

Yeah, he didn’t win DPOY. But let me tell you one thing - TJ Watt is a genetically modified freak who will stop at nothing to strip your quarterback, rack up sacks, and stack up racks. AND HE ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE. TRENT JORDAN WATT IS INEVITABLE.

#19 - George Kittle - San Francisco 49ers - Tight End

George Kittle’s 2024 season seemingly flew under the radar, in part due to how poorly the team performed, but make no mistake about it - this was one of the best tight end seasons we’ve seen. He was one of the best receivers in the league period and his blocking has always spoken for itself but there’s some crime scene footage further down anyway. On the receiving side of things, among all players with 1000+ receiving yards this season, Kittle ranked:

  • 1st in catch rate (2nd since tracked)
  • 1st in success rate (1st all-time period)
  • 1st in passer rating when targeted (2nd since tracked)
  • 1st in yards per target (1st all-time for TEs since tracked)

Kittle’s efficiency as a receiver is unparalleled, and the volume isn’t exactly slacking, either - he was 13th in both total receiving yards and receiving yards per game despite ranking 46th in targets.

Comparing him to tight ends alone almost seems unfair, though he is the only one of the five leading receivers at the position this season who actually played the majority of his snaps inline.

On the other …
