It seems like back in the day, every year there were a handful of “bluechip” recruits whose college career would be up in the air on signing day. Maybe they needed a higher SAT or to retake a core class. But these days it’s never mentioned at all, much less a frequent occurrence. Or do I just not pay close enough attention any longer?

First one that comes to mind is Shon Mitchell having to go the JUCO route before his two years at Texas, though there were plenty more. And some would never make it to D1 at all.
