My boyfriend (m 30s) and I (w 30s) went out for a dinner date. We took a walk around town, saw a restaurant that looked nice. They had a few tables outside, each seating up to four people. One table was taken by another couple who was finishing up their drinks. We sat down, the waitress came to take our order, brought our drinks. We sat there enjoying the fantastic weather, chatting, waiting for our food.

Next thing I know, a cyclist stopped by the restaurant. She was very obviously doing some longer tour since she was in full cycling gear, sweaty and red-faced. By that point, all tables were taken, the remaining tables had either three or four occupants. She took a look at the menu on the restaurant’s wall, came over and asked if she could sit with us.

I admit that our first reaction was not the best, namely staring like deers in the headlights. After a few seconds, I pulled my manners together and said “sorry, but we’re on a date”. She said no problem, she won’t disrupt us, she just wanted some dinner. I must have stared at her in a pretty flabberghasted way, because she added that we were two people on a table for four, there weren’t any free tables. I told her that sorry, but no, we wanted to have our dinner with just the two of us at the table.

At that point, she started a whole rant about people being entitled, taking up double the space and then refusing to share, main character syndrome etc., took her bike and left.

To me, it’s inconceivable to ask a couple to include your sweaty ass in their romantic dinner date, but she was so full of indignation at my refusal that I am second-guessing myself.

So AITA for refusing to share the table?

A few things that may make a difference:

There are plenty of other restaurants around.

There are probably more tables inside the restaurant, but I can imagine that it’s unpleasantly hot and stuffy since in my country we don’t really do AC.

We didn’t have any choices for smaller tables, all were the same size.

The waitress was not around when this exchange happened, it was over in like a minute.
