I can’t tell y’all how many times I’ve reported something that is overtly sexist, encourages sexism, riles up sexists, etc. and reddit comes back and tells me, “This content doesn’t go against our guidelines”
Misogyny is so rampant on this app yet it seems like women just get the bottom of the barrel when it comes to us pointing out content that is encouraging hate. Other forms of hate also tend to go unchecked but for some reason misogyny is still SO widely accepted and ignored. Every time it just makes me think about how pretty much every single mass/active shooter also holds often violent anti-woman sentiments. But that’s somehow never seen as a “real issue” or problem. I’ve seen entire comments, entire PROFILES, of men shitting on women, constantly posting horrible things about them, sometimes getting violent and reddit is just like “lol k? what do u want us to do abt it…”
I really hate comparing forms of hate but if their profiles were filled with the same kind of hate towards minorities or LGBT people (which I also am) reddit would be so much quicker to remove it. Maybe this is just due to filters being designed for that specific kind of hate but you can have entire profiles of men just denigrating women comment after comment after comment, encouraging radicalization in other men, spewing hate and reddit doesn’t see a problem with it until that man begins to threaten individual women on the app for disagreeing with him. Like “You can call women every insult in the book and promote hate but just don’t threaten to assault someone and you’re all good”
Its maddening. People have said that part of it is that misogyny has just become more dogwhistled and insidious and reddit’s relying on bots to do their moderating for them allows nearly all of it to go unchecked.
