Me and my wife have two almost adult sons, a 13 year old daughter and kids and a foster daughter who is 11. A few hours ago we came home from a wedding and the girls room are right next to each other. the 11 year old came downstairs and told us that she had a headache and apparently our daughter was playing loud music and refusing to close her door or turn it down. So me and my wife are walked upstairs to talk to her.

After we asked her why wouldn’t close her door or lower the volume she started crying and going on a rant about things her foster sister had done recently. We could barely hear what she was saying but one this that really made us strongly react was “she called me ugly”. Immediately I stormed into our foster daughters room and might’ve raised my voice more than I intended to because i was screaming “have you called my daughter ugly?”. She looked at me and said “yeah”.

I took her iPad and her phone and my wife told her that our daughter is not ugly and yelled that she should look herself in the mirror. Things escalated and we had a huge argument, people that were not related to the situation got involved because of how strongly we reacted and that we were screaming at a kid. I got told that we were way out of line but the thing is that we were all very tired, we had just gotten home which i think is the reason things got as bad as it did. AITA?
