Toledo (high = 57, low = 79) closes out the book on the MAC in this countdown as their preseason pick for the championship at #72. Jason Candle heads into his 10th full season in charge of the Rockets and looks to get them back to the conference championship game for the third time in the last 4 years, but to also rebound from last season’s underwhelming 6th place finish, even if it did end with that record setting 6 OT bowl win over Pitt. He will do so with the most returning production in the MAC (48th nationally), including the 11th highest ranked offense in the country, including QB Tucker Gleason and his 31 total TDs (24 passing, 7 rushing) and bowl MVP WR Junior Vandeross III. They did lose 1,000 yard receiver Jerjuan Newton (Denver Broncos) and 9 TD reception TE Anthony Torres (LA Rams), but have beefed up through both their recruiting (tops in the MAC, 75th nationally) and the portal (4th in the MAC, including former Kentucky RB Chip Trayanum - put a pin in that) to give them the best overall incoming class to the conference along with the top returning talent, which explains the high expectations for the Rockets in 2025. Their schedule starts with a trip to Lexington to face Kentucky (wonder if they’ll have any insights into the Wildcats offense?), and if they can win on the road against an SEC team and follow that up with a run of the table, don’t be stunned if the Rockets launch to the top of the G5 rankings over a Boise team that loses at Notre Dame or a Tulane team that loses to Ole Miss. The rest of Toledo’s schedule is quite manageable, with non-conference games against Western Kentucky and at the Palouse, plus a conference slate that doesn’t include preseason MAC #2 Ohio.
