I deliver groceries as my partime job. I have for a couple of years.
Sometimes I do make a full day, and I can go over 80 addresses. Most of the people that order can be split into 2 catagories, people who find it hard to do groceries and busy families.
With the busy families the ‘mom’ usually opens the door. One of the reasons I am fond of this job, is to see people happy.
Sometimes thou, the ‘man of the house’ opens the door. Every once in a while a “joke” gets made at the expance of the wife, because this is a lot of groceries, in fact too many, and at seccond glance, she went on a shopping spree apperently. The wife did the groceries wrong. Hur dur.
I once got comments like these 3 times in a row, and I sarcasticly remarked at the third client, I’m sure she cooks some good food for you thou. He agreed on me with that. It shut him up too.
But I don’t think he sensed the many layers my awnser could have.
In a long day, the chance a couple like that opens the door together, grows. And an ‘silent’ argument unfolds infront of me,
Husband grows upset at the amount of it. His smile visibly turns upside down after he sees what I bring. Tension fills the air. Passive aggressiveness. Mom is trying to explain apologetically to him, that yes, their family needs this food, and it was even on sale!!! Ha ha.
She ordered dishwashsoap, toilletpaper, dogfood, salt, milk, eggs, bread, vegtables, meat, fruit, cheese, a bag of chips and candy.
While 3 growing kids and a dog are running through the living room in the background, she is saying sorry to him.
Now that time has passed since I started this job, I’ve had many moments like this. I’ve always have just put on a big smile, to be client friendly, ignoring HIM. I’ve had woman saying softly sorry to me out of his hearing distance afterwards, before closing the door. (Sorry for his behavior.)
I’ve always responded with ‘It’s okay, no worries, I undertstand!.’ But it feels painfull to stand there like 😃 when the door closes. I think about how their night goes afterwards.
I can’t imagine opening the fridge full with food and thinking Santa Claus put it there.
