Today marks exactly 11 weeks (77 days) until the season starts, and we reach THE Ohio University Bobcats (high = 53, low = 95), who these aggregated polls would pick to get back to the MAC Championship Game, which they won last season for their first MAC crown since 1968. They will have to do that without head coach Tim Albin, who was hired away to replace Biff Poggi at Charlotte. Brian Smith stepped in to lead the Bobcats to a bowl win over Jacksonville State, and will now be overseeing his inaugural full season as the head coach in Athens. Given the coaching change, it shouldn’t be a shock that Ohio didn’t have a great haul in terms of recruiting or the transfer portal, but for a conference champ to rank 2nd to last in recruiting and the overall incoming class (121st and 129th nationally, respectfully) seems extraordinarily bad. The Bobcats do rank 54th in returning production, mostly on the defense (36th) instead of the offense (75th), but losing 4* DL Bradley Weaver to Rutgers and watching 5 other defenders follow Albin to Charlotte makes that seem a little iffy. They do return starting QB Parker Navarro, but leading rusher Anthony Tyus III and the only WR to catch more than 1 TD pass (Coleman Owen) both graduated and signed free agent contracts in the NFL. Starting the schedule at Rutgers, home against West Virginia and then in the horseshoe in Columbus sure looks like a recipe to start 0-3, so Albin’s ability to get buy in from his team is likely to be tested before they head into the MAC schedule.
