As a BYU fan, I have been taught that the 1980 Holiday Bowl, dubbed the “Miracle Bowl” is the greatest comeback of all time. I even grew up with it as a playable scenario on NCAA Football 05.
If you are not familiar with this game, here is a link for the highlights, I unfortunately couldn’t find a version that has the scores on the screen though. This game saw #14 BYU’s pro-style pass oriented offense pitted against #19 SMU’s “Pony Express” explosive running game. BYU trailed most of the game (resulting in my grandma leaving the living room to go knit). With only four minutes left in the game the Cougars were down 25-45. As fans began to leave the stadium, BYU quarterback Jim McMahon screamed at them that the game wasn’t over. McMahon backed this up by throwing a 14 yard touchdown pass. BYU recovered the onside kick and quickly made their way down the field culminating in a 1 yard touchdown run, leaving the score at 39-45. SMU was forced to punt on their next possession, BYU blocked the punt taking possession on the 41 yard line with 13 seconds left in the game. On 3rd and 10, McMahon launched a 41 yard Hail Mary touchdown pass, with the extra point sealing the Cougars win, 46-45. The Cougars scored 21 points in the last 2:33 to secure their first ever bowl game win. And now there is a bowling alley near Provo called Miracle Bowl.
With that said, I am sadly unfamiliar with other great comeback stories and would like to know what are your candidates for best comeback of all time?
EDIT: if you could explain what made your pick such a great comeback as well that would be great
