San Jose State (high = 65, low = 93) sits at #79 in the countdown, the third highest MWC team. Ken Niumatalolo looks to build on his first season at the helm in San Jose, a 7-6 affair and an exhilarating 5 OT Hawaii Bowl game against USF, and further demonstrate he’s not exclusively a triple option coach. He’s going to have to do that without a couple of key contributors - All American WR Nick Nash (1,382 yards receiving and 16 TD receptions) somehow went undrafted but signed with the Atlanta Falcons, and season starting QB Emmett Brown took the DeLorean to Coastal Carolina - but the Spartans still rank 63rd nationally in returning production, including backup QB Walter Eget and leading rusher Floyd Chalk IV. That’s probably a good thing, because it sure doesn’t look like there’s a whole lot of new talent coming in. The recruiting class (115th) and portal class (119th) are all near the bottom nationally this year, though WR Malachi Riley (Arizona) and Leland Smith (Purdue) project to be among the few transfer starters in 2025. The schedule actually sets up nicely for Niumatalolo and the Spartans. Other than a week 2 game at Texas, the rest of the non-conference (Central Michigan, Idaho and “at” Stanford) are all winnable (and in fact are all teams San Jose State is projected to be stronger than), but also the conference schedule misses both UNLV and Boise State, putting 11-1 and a MWC championship game berth on the table as being legitimately possible.
