A friend of mine detested Michael from The Office. But through rewatches on Netflix, he came to actually see him in a very different way. He was able to go past the image of Michael as an incompetent, stupid, self-important, and unbearable boss, which resembled his own boss in real life, to someone who felt vulnerable and had a child-like innocence and desire to help others and be of value to them.
For me it was Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad. He aggravated me and continued to fuck things up all the time. Hated him. But I eventually developed compassion for him and started to appreciate his struggles. He got a moral compass, he’s just foolish and immature. He screws things up. But you can relate to him because he is not evil, just stupid.
Have you had similar experiences toward particular characters or toward a whole series, where your initial views have changed drastically after repeated viewing?
