I really have to recommend this show highly to everyone; it is a journey through delusion and madness like no other. Every season the main character becomes more and more unhinged, and his flaws accentuate his human characteristics. I also feel like the show did a spectacular job of highlighting his continuous descent into deeper and deeper delusions. Season 5 in particular was absolutely a roller coaster ride.
But the final episode, Jesus Christ was it a disaster. What was that last sequence? She was shot, drowned, and strangled. We watched her submerge under water and sink to the bottom of a lake. How did she manage to not only fight him off in that wounded state, but also “fake” drowning, run him down in the dark with a broken ankle, find him in the woods, recover the gun, stalk him, and shoot him?
The show was always over the top, and it is part of what gave it the charm… but that finale sequence was terrible. I am glad to see he got caught, went to jail, etc, but Brontë absolutely needed to die and the episode would have been better in every way. It is quite literally the only scene in the episode that shouldn’t have happened. The cops still would have caught him, they still would have arrested him, the evidence still existed. Making her superhuman and immortal was a really poor choice IMO. And it dampened the whole season in a way I can only compare to the Arya Stark + Night King sequence in Game of Thrones.
