With Oregon State (high = 72, low = 105) entering the countdown at 87, the Pac-2 makes their entry in what will be their last season as an “independent” before whatever happens in Vegas (which, so far, is staying in Vegas) becomes public. Trent Bray returns for his sophomore season after leading the Beavers to a 5-7 record last year, which started out strong before dropping 6 of their final 7 games (though the one win was to capture the Pac-2 title over Washington State). Oregon State ranks 39th nationally in returning production, including 24th on the defensive side of the ball (Bray’s specialty). Returning are leading rusher Anthony Hankerson and most of their receiving corps, though a couple of key transfers, including former Duke QB Maalik Murphy and Miami TE Riley Williams helped the Beavers lead all of the G6 in terms of their transfer portal class (and, for that matter, overall incoming class). Paired with the 64th best overall recruiting class and Oregon State really looks to be in better shape (in my opinion) than their consensus rank here. The schedule also looks less formidable, including an FCS game, 4 games against teams below them and (spoiler alert) 4 more games against teams we’ll be talking about soon. The only games where they figure to be underdogs by more than a few points are their back-to-back road tilts at Texas Tech and at Oregon. I would be surprised to not see the Beavers bowling in one of the Pac-12’s slots at the end of the season.
