I (18F) have always had mild ~ moderate period pain, but today I started getting really bad cramps at school, much worse than usual. My friends said I looked pale and insisted I take some ibuprofen since one of them happened to have some. At first it wasn’t working and I was starting to consider leaving class, but to my surprise the pain started fading significantly within 30 minutes or so. After an hour I felt so much better. My mom has always told me not to rely on painkillers, and I didn’t think much of it because I could get through my periods just fine on my own. However, with how bad the cramps were today i’m worried that I’ll start needing to take painkillers regularly if I want to function properly in school. I told her today about how much the ibuprofen helped and that I wanted to get some on the way home since my cramps usually get worse on the second day, but she basically told me no way. She said that painkillers were bad for me, and I needed to “feel the cramps” because it would prepare me for childbirth. She said that if I couldn’t take the pain of periods, I would suffer tremendously giving birth. Of course I can always buy them myself and hide them from her, but i’m just shocked that she would say that. My friends have never been denied painkillers from their parents, apparently. Should I listen to her or just go buy ibuprofen behind her back?
