After discussion in the game threads yesterday about the…design choices…for the new scorebugs debuted by Fox and NBC this season, I decided to figure out which networks are actually wasting the most screen real estate with their obtrusive graphics.
So, I took a screengrab from each network yesterday, threw it into Photoshop, and counted how much of the screen was devoted to three categories:
- The scorebug [in red at the links below]
- The ticker [green]
- Other branding (network logo, “LIVE”, etc) [blue]
A gallery of all of our contestants is here
So without further ado…
| Network | Image | % Scorebug | % Ticker | % Other Branding | % Football! |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NBC | EXAMPLE | 5.38% | 0% | 0.16% | 94.47% |
| CBS | EXAMPLE | 5.38% | 0% | 0.79% | 93.84% |
| ESPN+ | EXAMPLE | 6.75% | 0% | 0% | 93.25% |
| BTN | EXAMPLE | 6.55% 2 | 0% | 0.54% | 92.91% |
| Fox (Big Noon) | EXAMPLE | 7.17% 2 | 0% | 0.86% | 91.97% |
| CBSSN | EXAMPLE | 5.28% | 8.13% | 0.66% | 85.93% |
| Pac 12 Network | EXAMPLE | 4.57% | 9.53% | 0.24% | 85.66% |
| FS1 & Fox (non-BNS) | EXAMPLE | 6.07% 2 | 7.91% | 0.41% | 85.61% |
| ESPN Networks | EXAMPLE | 7.06% | 10.12% | 0% | 82.81% |
| ABC | EXAMPLE | 7.29% | 9.99% | 0.47% | 82.25% |
| NFL Network | EXAMPLE | 4.73% | 19.12% 1 | 0.56% | 75.58% |
1 NFLN scales down the video to accommodate their ticker, so I included the wasted space for letterboxing in the ticker category
2 Since the teams’ logos, nicknames, and rankings extend outside of the “box” on new Fox scorebug, the exact size will vary depending on the teams playing (bonus fun fact: the clock box of the Fox scorebug is not parallel to the score box, and is slightly tilted to the right 😵💫)
So now, for the first ever u/macncheeseface CFB scorebug awards:
🏆 Smallest scorebug: Pac 12 Network! (RIP)
🏆 Smallest ticker (for networks with a full-time ticker): FS1!
🏆 Least overall screen space devoted to graphics: NBC Sports!
Congratulations to all of our winners, and congratulations to all of us who get to watch college football once again.
