I want to comment on the fact that a lot of MWC fans feel shaded and pissed as they consistently hear, “get ready to learn MW buddy”. Or, “No other choice but to join the MWC now”. Or, “this is a disaster for WSU/OSU”.
WSU (I won’t speak for OSU) would be happy join into the MWC. I don’t think less of the institutions in the MWC, and I certainly don’t think less of their athletics. We have been handled by USU, Fresno, BSU, and others within our window of being “good”. There are many strong programs that build a fun and entertaining conference across multiple sports. Much of the talking has come from the institutions that got invites elsewhere or from members of other conferences celebrating the demise of the Pac12.
The main worry on our end comes from the cascading effect of shrinking athletic revenue, which will result in disbanding of programs and consequent firing of staff. This will likely effect WSU’s enrollment in some way and the community as far as businesses in measurable ways. But make no mistake, we do not think we’re better than conference members in the MWC, just worried about how we will transition to a stable form in the coming years.
I will personally be happy to grab direct flights out of KSEA to KFAT, KSAN, KRNO, KBOI, KHNL, KABQ etc. and enjoy the regionalism and cities of the MWC. It bothers me that vibe is we’re being pricks. I can promise you if we end up in the the same conference it will be solid interactions and respect. Those that choose to head to Pullman will have a great time.
Anyway, just my two cents.
