I volunteer at a rape crisis center. I’d been there less than a year when the call came in. Check the boxes, female; age 15; 3 years increasing sexual assault by an uncle culminating in tonight’s rape, and off to the crime scene. The rest is nothing more than gruesome details we’ve all heard before.
We found her shelter and help. We let her know she was not alone. I helped her find a foster home. She asked my name and kept my card. I encouraged her and helped her find her own courage. I listened to her; helped her accept the love offered by her foster parents. Today, I attended her graduation as a nursing assistant. She has a job lined up and in January, she will begin classes for her nursing degree. I met her boyfriend as well, a fellow student. Considering her foster parents, I’m certain he’s been well-vetted. Judging by the look in his eyes as she accepted her diploma, she chose well. She’s worked so hard to overcome the drugs and brutality in her life… and to come out of it with the joy and confidence in life she exudes is damn near miraculous. That small part I had in this change allows me to continue.
There are success stories out there. Become part of them… volunteer, contribute. Please help these successes become more common. You can make a difference… and it feels wonderful.
