I just finished watching Succession and holy shit I didn’t expect Greg to play such a huge role in the alliance shifts after Logan died. Idk if this is a glazing post, but I’m posting this cuz he was quite interesting to watch.
His biggest strength (which he explicitly acknowledges in his first meeting with Matsson) is that he is somehow able to weasel into important spaces with key people while looking harmless. Logan, Matsson, the Roy siblings, etc. just treat him as if he were some kind of pet that they can just abuse at any time. This allows him to basically disarm them into spilling important information in a setting where they are usually drunk or high.
Despite people underestimating him, he often offers to be bribed for his silence/information with a raise or promotion. Most of the characters seem to understand that, despite looking down on him. This is illustrated in Greg’s relationship with Kendall, whom by the last few episodes, treats Greg’s information as highly valuable.
The character that made the biggest mistake regarding Greg was Matsson. For some reason, Matsson decided to let Greg in on the GoJo alliance(?). This has brought nothing but headaches for Matsson, as Greg:
- Exposed Shiv’s alliance with Matsson -> Kendall allows Mencken to win -> Now Matsson has to find a new US CEO that he didn’t need if the other candidate won + Shiv is pushing her authority further than what Matsson is comfortable with by offering herself to be that CEO
- Exposed that Matsson is not going to make Shiv CEO -> made Shiv switch her alliance to the Kendall team, which possibly could have ended the acquisition
I feel like Greg’s disarming quality best shines here, as there was no strategic reason behind why Matsson would do this. Idk if Matsson knows or cares if Greg is set to inherit Ewan’s seat and fortune. But even then, the inheritance is not guaranteed- as Greg is currently set to not inherit anything from Ewan. There is no way that Matsson would set a relationship with a guy with very unclear prospects. So I can only conclude that Greg ‘charmed’ his way into the GoJo circle.
The second one was Shiv in the election episode. I physically winced when she told him to fuck himself when he was blackmailing her with the information of her alliance with Matsson- I just didn’t know that he would immediately spill to Kendall in that exact same episode.
Overall, I felt like the character really paid off in terms of what the show was building with him. His role was very entertaining overall. That’s all I wanted to say.
