It’s getting where a lot of them don’t fit in US parking spaces. A modern Mitsubishi Mirage G4, which most people would whine about being “too small” is larger than an early 1990s Corolla.
I’ve got a project vehicle (A Samurai) that was considered small when it was made, and it’s just tiny next to a newer full-size truck. I fit in it just fine.

Out of interest, are the spaces regulated and a consistent size?
Because some car parks have fucking tiny spaces so they can cram more people in and make more money.
And the garages in my new estate are tiny… So they can cram more in and make more money.

It’s probably different in the UK, but in the US this might not even be the reason. A lot of cities in the US have regulations that require X parking spots per newly constructed home. It becomes prohibitively expensive to build something like a midsize apartment building because of the parking requirements.
