This has probably been discussed, as I haven’t looked up any reviews because I just finished it last night.
The cinematography is amazing, the acting is great, the writing is clever, and the plot drew me in close.
But I just felt absolutely disgusted by the entire thing.
I’m not a sexually repressed or socially uptight person, but I’ve never seen a show that repulsed me so viscerally.
By the last few episodes, I realized that there isn’t a single redeeming person in the show. I despised every character to the bone. I know that season one had a similar conceit and very few redeeming characters, but perhaps the humor of it allowed me to enjoy it more. I could identify with the bad people because they made me laugh as well.
Season 2, on the other hand, was built on dark tension. Bad vibes. Bad people doing bad things. And I couldn’t identify with a single character on a personal level.
Usually with that sort of setup I look forward to seeing the bad people get what they deserve in the end, but with White Lotus I just wanted it to end. I wanted out of the world they created.
I can’t deny that the themes were interesting: sexuality, emotional bonds, relationships, sexual currency, etc., but it all seemed like such a nihilistic exercise in philosophy/storytelling.
Am I alone in feeling this way, or do you believe that was the creator’s intent?
