Since the Chiefs’ SB blowout loss I’ve seen a surprising amount of people fully expecting Mahomes has another 10-15 more years in him, no question. Wasn’t just Chiefs fans coping either, fans from all over the league share the same sentiment.
Because Brady played well when he was 45 and definitely could’ve kept playing, many expect that to be the new normal, and I just want to dispell that notion with this post.
Brady’s tenure with the Bucs lasted 50 games, he had 14,643 yards, 108 TDs, 33 INTs, 66.7% comp, 98.1 Rating, and a 7.43 ANY/A. Here’s it broken up by year
Age 43 (2020)
- 4,633 yards, 40 TDs, 12 INTs, 65.7% comp, 102.2 Rating, 8.02 ANY/A
Age 44 (2021)
- 5,316 yards (led NFL), 43 TDs (led NFL), 12 INTs, 67.5% comp, 102.1 Rating, 7.84 ANY/A
Age 45 (2022)
- 4,694 yards, 25 TDs, 9 INTs, 66.8% comp, 90.7 Rating, 6.53 ANY/A
Here’s the very short list of QBs who played in their 40s (minimum 8 games played in a season)

Brett Favre
- Age 40 - 16 games, 4,202 yards, 33 TDs, 7 INTs, 68.4% comp, 107.2 Rating, 8.56 ANY/A
- Age 41- 13 games, 2,509 yards, 11 TDs, 19 INTs, 60.6% comp, 69.9 Rating, 5.23 ANY/A

- Age 42 - 10 games, 1,632 yards, 11 TDs, 8 INTs, 56.2% comp, 76.6 Rating, 5.78 ANY/A
Aaron Rodgers
- Age 41 - 17 games, 3,897 yards, 28 TDs, 11 INTs, 63% comp, 90.5 Rating, 6.78 ANY/A
Vinny Testaverde
- Age 41 - 16 games, 3,532 yards, 17 TDs, 20 INTs (led league), 60% comp, 76.4 Rating, 6.0 ANY/A
Matt Hasselback
- Age 40 - 8 games, 1,690 yards, 9 TDs, 5 INTs, 60.9% comp, 84 Rating, 6.43 ANY/A
All their stats combined - 125 games, 28,671 yards, 192 TDs, 105 INTs
Brady’s stats from his entire 40s
- 98 games, 27,632 yards, 193 TDs, 60 INTs, 65.6% comp, 97.1 Rating, 7.53 ANY/A
Brady’s 17 game average in his 40s was 4,793 yards, 32 TDs, and 10 INTs. That’s just insane
6 QBs and 10 seasons (compared to Brady’s 6) and they only have ~1,000 more yards, still a TD shy from him, but also has 72 more INTs.
Brady is an anomaly who’s in the same realm as Jerry Rice, maybe even more than Rice to be honest, but that’s a different convo. They’re def in the same ballpark, and I’ll be making a post similar to this for Rice, but anyways, it’s time to think of Brady’s longevity the same way we view Rice’s for WRs.
We honestly might not see another QB or WR do what they did even if health and conditioning have vastly improved and continues to, too. And that’s okay, just enjoy the now, now because nothing is guaranteed, especially with how physical football is
